Kalopa State Park
One of my favorite destinations on the Island of Hawaii. It is a marvelous place to hike, with dense dark forests, and well-marked trails. A wonderful place of solitude and peace to explore. It is a rare forest of native plants and trees. Massive 'ohi'a trees and kopiko trees along with huge hapu'u ferns create a primordial feel to this 100 acre park. It was created in 1962 through the efforts of a group of locals who sought to save it from being converted to sugarcane fields as was common at that time.
